H. Frank Carey High School senior Joseph Campisi presented his research, “Hair Biomaterial Histology and Preliminary Parietal Regeneration Studies,” at Hofstra University on Oct. 23.
Throughout the summer, Joseph spent eight weeks completing scientific research under Professor Roche C. deGuzman in the Bioengineering Program at Hofstra. He worked with various undergraduate students, as well as a high school partner. Within the program, Joseph conducted research on 40 mice that included training in surgery, anesthetization, craniotomy, implantation of growth factors and suturing of a wound. Additionally, Joseph completed the full histological process in sampling tissue from a previous implantation study involving mice and stained his own samples.
Joseph is continuing his research regarding an immunohistochemical study of precursor proteins in cartilage development at Hofstra this school year.
