On Nov. 15, 13 district students participated in a job shadow day at Belmont Park with the support of NYRA. Students engaged in this experience based on their general interest for career exploration and their enrollment in the career and Technical Education Program.
Students started their day with a tour of daily training on the main track, with career insights from the head starter and a Belmont mechanic. Representatives from NYRA discussed the multi-year renovation project and extensive operations of the facility that currently include various animal care pathways, a daycare center and a medical clinic facilitated by Northwell. The backstretch tour included aspects of environmental science with an overview of the benefits of synthetic tracks. The day concluded with lunch and a panel discussion with members from the electrician, plumber and carpenters unions. Each union member discussed their journey through high school and advice for how to join a union. They expressed the importance of financial literacy and how it relates to where they are today.
Thank you to the team of Belmont and NYRA for taking the time to invest in this experience for our students!
