The district honored the accomplishments of students and staff at the board of education meeting on May 28.
Five students, one from each high school, each received a $500 scholarship from SCOPE. The honored students include Valerie Grande from Elmont Memorial High School, Henry Smith from Floral Park Memorial High School, Alexandra Casalaspro from H. Frank Carey High School, Pari Shah from New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Maya Cherubin from Sewanhaka High School. They were chosen by the counseling department in each of their buildings.
Sewanhaka High School Principal Nichole Allen then officially unveiled the school’s new mascot, the Ravens. The yearlong process of selecting the new mascot and logo involved the assistance of a committee comprised of alumni, students, faculty and community members, as well as assistance from Jostens.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Thomas Dolan then announced that Director of Career and Technical Education Dr. Patrick Dunphy has been nominated for the 2025 ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education) Region I Administrator of the Year Award.
The recognitions concluded with the commendation of tenured staff. They are Taryn Johnson and Eric Rizzo at the administration building; Samantha Johnson, Thomas Innes, Frank Nuara, Jaclyn Miller and Judith McMillian from Elmont Memorial High School; Vincent Fortunato, Sarah Clahane, Jennifer Johnston, Nitasha Dutt, Crystal Kingdon, Lisa Knowles and Natasha Santana from Floral Park Memorial High School; Anthony Brancato, Jessica Burgalassi, Elena D'Ambrosio, Casey McCarraher, William Lynch, Briana Scognamiglio, Kerry Eckert, Jillian Anderson, Tina Ciaccio Sikiric, Sharon Roccaforte, Victoria DiGuadio and Juliann Rizzi from H. Frank Carey High School; Elizabeth Leydon, Jennifer Westwater, Nicole Horton, Annmarie Thornby, Kristin Flood, Rebecca D'orsogna and Gianna Brusca from New Hyde Park Memorial High School; and Patrick Dunphy, Paige Fitzsimmons, Brianne Giuliano, Joseph Florko, Josue Barahona, Michele Matthews, Jessica Bee, Michael Senese, Fred Calzone, Christine Licastri and Gian Vassaliko from Sewanhaka High School.
