Automotive Students Visit North Hempstead Country Club

On May 22, students from the Sewanhaka CTE Automotive program participated in a career exploration experience in partnership with North Hempstead Country Club. This industry in the Long Island region provides career paths in hospitality, agriculture, mechanics, operations and more. Students in the automotive program have gained ongoing industry insights to this field through recent career speaker panels and summer employment opportunities. North Hempstead Country Club Superintendent Tom Kaplun also serves as the president for the Long Island Golf Course Superintendents Association and spearheads the local workforce development efforts between education and industry for the NYS Turfgrass Association Registered Apprenticeship Program. The apprenticeship program offers students the opportunity to pursue groundskeeping or turf equipment technician. The North Hempstead Country Club team dedicated time to sharing their backgrounds, what they love about their roles and gave students a hands-on tour of their operations. Students drew several connections between the technical skills they have developed in the automotive program and how technology, diagnostics and troubleshooting is utilized in a golf course setting.
