Elmont Memorial Science Research is proud to announce that our Medical Marvels team was awarded first place Room Presentation ($500) and third place Paper and Poster ($500) for their outstanding work. The team was tasked with providing a solution for the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. The Elmont team designed an app, Social Media Awareness & Regulation in Teens (SMART!), to help teenagers learn to be aware of their social media use so they could make better choices about screen time and impact on mental health.

Team members included Simone Alford (9), Mahaveen Iftikhar (10), Nabeela Jahir (9), Menujan Nanthakumar (10), Odelia Nugent (10), and Tania Trent (10). The team was advised by Elmont Memorial Science Research Teacher Mrs. Michelle Flannory.

The Medical Marvels program, established by the Feinstein Institutes and the Center for Workforce Readiness, encourages science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career pathways for Long Island high school students. This year’s event was held at the Feinstein Institute on February 28. Entries were judged by teams from Northwell. Elmont’s winning team will split the prize money for their work.
