Scholar Athletes of the Year

Congratulations to Nicholas Zacharis and Sophie Obrycki, our Scholar Athletes of the Year!

Nicholas has excelled both academically and athletically during his time at Floral Park Memorial. His dedication and unwavering work ethic are truly commendable. He has maintained an outstanding overall average of 101.85, showcasing his commitment to excellence in his studies.

Nicholas's talents extend beyond the classroom. He has been a vital member of the Floral Park Memorial Knights varsity basketball team for three years and was awarded All Conference for his last season. His prowess on the court has also been recognized, and he was chosen to receive the NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award for the 2021-2022 season.

Nicholas's passion for basketball extends to his volunteer work, where he coaches and mentors upcoming athletes in the Super League Basketball Stars and Junior Knicks Basketball Camp. He also selflessly gives back to his community by coaching and mentoring the basketball team at his church and the Unified Basketball Team at Floral Park Memorial. His leadership and compassion shine through as he provides instruction, support, and guidance to these aspiring athletes.

Nicholas will be attending the University of Miami in the fall, where he plans to pursue a pre-medicine track.

Sophie has maintained an exemplary academic record during her high school career, with an impressive overall average of 99.92. Her dedication to her studies is truly commendable, and she consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and passion for learning. Beyond her academic achievements, Sophie is a well-rounded individual who has been active in a variety of extracurricular activities.

One of Sophie's notable accomplishments is her involvement in gymnastics. She has been a valuable member of the Sewanhaka CHSD varsity gymnastics team for three years now, showcasing her talent and commitment to the sport. This year, Sophie's hard work paid off as she earned the prestigious title of All County for beam and floor. Her achievements also extend to academic excellence in athletics, as evidenced by her receipt of the Scholar Athlete Award and placing first on the beam in coaches invitationals in 2022.

Prior to her high school years, Sophie was a dedicated member of Cherry Lane Gymnastics, where she competed across Long Island, showcasing her competitive spirit and determination. Additionally, Sophie has been actively involved in community service efforts, fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis by participating in the Mighty Madison Gymnastics Meet. Her commitment to giving back to the community is truly admirable.

Sophie will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall.
