Sewanhaka High School eighth grader Isaiah Adeleke has been selected as one of the 2024 winners of the Long Island Water Quality Challenge. This competition is presented by the LIRPC in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. His proposal of “Plant-Based Filter Bioretention Systems and Swales and Wetlands: Sewanhaka High School Property Stormwater Management” aimed at mitigating groundwater nitrogen pollution through bioretention systems. His plan includes the use of fungi and plants to augment the absorption of nutrients and lower the combined sewer overflow with planter boxes around the ponds in the courtyard. He has the opportunity to utilize a grant of $2,500 towards implementation of his proposed project next year.
