On June 2, New Hyde Park Memorial High School students were honored for their participation in the Long Island Science Congress, which was held in April.
Nine 9th graders from Mr. Denara’s Science Research class participated and placed in the Junior Division of the Long Island Science Congress.
In the category of Biology, Jason Stone and Clayton Wong received Highest Honors for their research project titled, “The Effect of Different Light Intensity on Chrysophytes.” The team also received the “Director’s Award” and were both awarded $50.
Jisha Jinu, Emily Lee and Nuha Kotwal received Honors for their ecological research project titled, “The Effects of Warmer Temperatures on The Consumption of Polyethylene by Galleria Mellonella Learvae.”
Hongxiang Kang and Joel Jose received Honors for their research on “Measuring the Mechanical Energy Produced by Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines” within the Energy and Engineering category.
Zarif Abrar and Rocco Lipari received Honors for their project, “The Effects of Acidification on the Population Size of Planaria” for the in the category of Ecology.
All nine students research projects were conducted at New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
Twenty-one students (nine projects) from Mrs. Stone’s Science Research 10th -12th grade classes participated in the Senior Division of the Long Island Science Congress.
Graduating senior Priya Persaud completed her project, “The Genomic Characterization and Clinical Relevance of TP53 Hotspot Mutations in Colorectal Cancer,” through Memorial Sloan Kettering’s HOPP Program and was awarded both first place in the category of Biology-Microbiology/Genetics and Highest Honors. Priya’s project was also nominated for New York State’s Science Congress.
Sophomores Sanjay Chemban, Oishik Saha and Vishnu Suresh were awarded Honors for their investigation, “Future Voices of Farmers: Voice Operated Seed Sowing System Via Raspberry Pi”, in the Ecology category.
