The Business Education Department celebrated Business Education Day, held on Oct. 17, with the launch of the Business Ed Bagel Shoppe. The student-run business partnered with “Pink October” to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
Students in Business Education classes participated in planning and executing this event during the weeks leading up to the sale. Students were able to extend creative and analytical competencies to assume their roles in this business concept. They also created a slogan for the day: “Sip, Savor and Support” and assembled pink ribbons for students to wear, as well as offered awareness bracelets to sell.
The Academy of Finance Computer Analysis and Information Processing class partnered with Tulip Bagels to plan to sell 400 pink bagels. The students used survey results to forecast quantities, down to the pound, of the amount of cream cheese and butter needed for the morning. They also generated projections for supplies
needed for iced coffee and pink lemonade beverages.
College Marketing students were given the opportunity for an authentic application of key management functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the business process. Students created a layout and staffing plan, and provided hands-on support for set up and breakdown.
The Entrepreneurship students learned the importance of working to prepare for a business opening by advertising around the school and preparing opening inventory and replenishing supplies throughout the morning.
Students in Business Law and Wall Street & Investments courses explored the value of businesses giving back to the communities they serve, and applied ways to creatively thank Tulip Bagels as a sponsor and provide a connection to the cause of supporting breast cancer research. Additionally, the Wall Street & Investments class created a giant check to present a donation of $1,462.56 in proceeds at the culmination of NHP’s “Pink it Up” week.
The App Design and Development students created social media content as another key marketing touchpoint to connect the business with the student community and this important cause. The Computer Applications course created a step-and-repeat banner using graphics and logos, and supplied pink props for students to wear in photos while waiting in line for their bagels. These students will also be writing letters to thank all that made the morning possible, including New Hyde Park Memorial High School administration, custodial team and cafeteria staff.
The Business Education Department of New Hyde Park Memorial would like to express our sincere gratitude to Anthony Kelly, owner of Tulip Bagels, for his generous donation of 400 bagels to help us to maximize our proceeds to support breast cancer research and for his support for Business Education.
