Dear Sewanhaka Central High School District Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! Our hope is that you have had the time this summer to relax, refresh, and rejuvenate for the start of the the new school year. The past eighteen months have been a trying time for all of us and we are happy that school will reopen fully for all students on Thursday, September 2, 2021.
The following is a summary of the Sewanhaka Central High School District reopening plan:
- Schools will open fully for in person, daily instruction of all students starting Thursday, September 2, 2021.
- All schools will return to bell schedules and students in all grades will transition from class to class.
- All students will be permitted to use assigned lockers.
- Students will maintain three feet of social distance when in classes when possible. There will be times throughout the day when the distance may be less, but again in accordance with the guidance to fully reopen school, this is an acceptable practice.
- Following the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) that prioritizes in-person instruction, the District will not have a full-year remote learning program. Parents of medically vulnerable students with documented medical conditions may make application for home instruction as per the usual 504 procedure.
- In accordance with guidance from the Nassau County Department of Health (NCDOH), students who are masked WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO QUARANTINE if they are determined to be a close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19.
- All co-curricular, extra-curricular, and athletic programs will be available for all students that wish to participate.
- On school buses, in compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) mandates, masks are required for anyone riding school buses.
- As per the directive of Governor Kathy Hochul, the NYSDOH issued “Commissioner’s Determination on Indoor Masking Pursuant to 10 NYCRR 2.61” on August 27, 2021. Per this determination, masks are now required for all students, staff, and visitors when in our school buildings. Masks remain optional when outside.
Once we are provided with additional guidance to schools from the Governor and the NYSDOH, the school district will modify our plan as necessary.
