2024 Summer Reading Program

Dear Sewanhaka Central High School District Students and Families:

We are pleased and excited to present our 2024 Summer Reading Program to you. The English Departments in all five of our schools have taken great pride in developing this year’s program, which addresses the following goals:

• Sharpen reading skills and combat the “summer slide!”

• Foster life-long reading habits.

• Expose students to a broad range of works to supplement the core English curriculum.

• Enable students to make connections between texts and their own experiences, other texts, and the world.

The summer reading books, organized by grade level and theme, can be found using the link below. While students are expected to select ONE book to read, they are certainly encouraged to read more! This information, as well as any pertinent information specific to your individual high school, will be shared with all students prior to the last day of classes, posted on each high school’s main webpage and library webpage, and shared with the local elementary schools and public libraries.

In September, teachers will lead discussions based on the summer reading texts, focusing on key reading skills within the context of the works. Students will be expected to come prepared to demonstrate their understanding of the books they chose to read.

We sincerely hope that our book selections will provide students with the opportunity to have an enriching reading experience while enjoying the relaxation and fun that summer brings. We also encourage parents to accompany their children on this reading journey.
