Students engaged with the Spanish language and Puerto Rican culture during a recent districtwide trip. They participated in hands-on experiences, including agricultural sustainability projects at Hacienda 8A, bomba and salsa workshops, and snorkeling with sea turtles. Students explored the historic streets of Old San Juan, toured El Yunque National Forest and learned about conservation efforts.
One of the most awe-inspiring moments was a nighttime kayak excursion, where students paddled through a bioluminescent bay and witnessed the natural phenomenon of glowing microorganisms lighting up the water around them. Whether navigating markets, ordering meals in Spanish, or connecting with locals, students applied their language skills in meaningful ways, turning classroom lessons into unforgettable real-world experiences and making new friends and forever memories.
The trip supported the district’s competencies for Portrait of a Graduate, as well.
The World Languages Department is grateful for opportunities like these and looks forward to future experiences that bring language learning to life. Providing students with real-world interactions strengthens their skills and prepares them to be engaged global citizens.
