On March 18, the district received a $30,000 grant from the non-profit organization Next Gen Personal Finance. The district was recognized for its implementation of a financial literacy class at all five buildings,
Starting in September 2023, ninth-grade students will be mandated to take the financial literacy class prior to graduation. They will be able to take the class anytime from ninth to 12th grade. According to NGPF, Sewanhaka is the first district on Long Island to mandate a stand-alone, financial literacy class as part of the graduation requirement.
District Business Coordinator and H. Frank Carey High School Business Chairperson/Teacher Jennifer Lehmann spearheaded the plan to bring a financial literacy class to the district. She brought the idea to Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Taryn Johnson, who then presented the proposal to the Board of Education. The Board approved the plan in February.
The district plans to use the grant to support the business education program.
