Thirty-four district students participated at the SkillsUSA Area 6 Regional Competition, held at Suffolk Community College on March 22. SkillsUSA is a nonprofit national education association that serves middle school, high school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
At the competition, district students excelled in several categories. In the “Promotional Bulletin Board” category, Sewanhaka High School students Julissa Cruz-Benavides, Magaly Beltran and Lydia Braun earned First Place. In the “Quiz Bowl” category, the district’s team earned First Place. The team was comprised of Elmont Memorial High School student Ifebi Chigozirim, Floral Park Memorial High School student Hannah DiMaggio, New Hyde Park Memorial High School student Daniel Dore, H. Frank Carey High School student Carolyn Gilman and New Hyde Park Memorial High School student Helee Shukla. In the “Open and Closing” category, the district’s team earned Second Place. The team included H. Frank Carey High School student Shannon Bock, Sewanhaka High School student Gabriella Budes, Elmont Memorial High School student Jolena Davis, H. Frank Carey High School student Kaitlyn Glowinski, Sewanhaka High School student Victoria O’Bryant and Floral Park Memorial High School student Dhruvi Patel.
Additionally, students were recognized in individual categories. Sewanhaka High School student Maria Arias Ordonez earned Second Place in “Junior Cosmetology.” H. Frank Carey High School student Cassie Shepherd earned Second Place in “Job Skills Demonstration A.” H. Frank Carey High School student Berna Aliu earned Second Place in “Prepared Speech.” In “Job Skill Demonstration,” Elmont Memorial High School student Elesse Valenzuela earned Second Place and H. Frank Carey High School student Sofia Legovich earned Third Place. Floral Park Memorial High School student Edward Pinsdorf earned Third Place in “Automotive Service.”
